In a recent feature by Josh Ross at Velo, the technical team highlighted how modern wide-range cassettes and shifting technology have effectively dismantled the old arguments against 1x on both road and gravel terrain.

Taking the 1x Philosophy a Step Further
While Velo’s analysis focused primarily on the component and drivetrain side of the equation, the true power of 1x is realised when the frame itself is designed exclusively around it.
Most conventional manufacturers retrofit 1x components onto frames originally sculpted for 2x drivetrains, leaving an empty derailleur mount and compromised tube shapes behind. True 1x performance requires starting from a blank sheet of paper: designing the frame geometry, carbon layup, bottom bracket shell, and aerodynamic profiles specifically for a single chain line.
By abandoning the front derailleur entirely at the design stage, bottom bracket stiffness can be maximised symmetrically, internal cable routing stays clean, and airflow over the drive side remains completely undisturbed.
The technical arguments made by Velo confirm what forward-thinking riders have experienced for years: 1x delivers a quieter, cleaner, simpler and faster ride.
